Johnson’s X1 85-1 at close of day one
By Sean Devers
Johnathon Foo made 60 on the opening day of the final two-day practice match yesterday at Providence as Anthony Adams’ XI were dismissed for 244 and by the close of play Leon Johnson’s XI were 85-1 in reply.
Foo stroked five fours in his 137-ball and 155 minute 60 and added 57 for the sixth wicket with Renaldo Ali-Mohammed who hit 39 from 44 balls with four fours and two sixes.
Trevon Griffith who hammered four fours and six in 24 and Raymond Perez continued his good form with 46 from 73 balls in 120 minutes with four fours and two sixes, featured in 55-run opening stand but only Akshaya Persaud, who reached the boundary five times in 32 and Quintin Sampson (15) reached double figures.
Left arm seamer Raymond Reifer, who missed the first match, had 3-18, while 20-year-old off-spinner Kevin Sinclair took 3-53 and Left-arm spinner Veersammy Permaul captured 2-72 for Johnson’s XI who lost Tevin Imlach (1) at 6-1 when he was LBW to Ali-Mohammed.
Chanderpaul Hemraj (46) and Skipper Johnson (27) were the not out batsmen, while their partnership has so far produced 79 runs.
Played before empty stands in scorching heat on a good track and fairly fast outfield, Griffith, who looked to counter-attack, was removed by Bajan Reifer before Perez who again looked set for a big score, was bowled by Chris Barnwell at 85-2.
Kemol Savory (4) was bowled by Permaul at 107-3 but Persaud and Foo took their team to 113-3 by Lunch.
After the interval Persaud was bowled by Bishoo at 147-4, while Adams (3) was trapped LBW to Permaul at 156-5.
Foo, who reached his 50 from 117 balls and 116 minutes with five boundaries and Ali-Mohammed, revived the position with their half-century stand.
Ali threw his wicket away with a poorly executed sweep to a ball outside leg stump from Sinclair and taken at leg-gully at 213-6 before Sinclair removed Sampson and Gudakesh Motie (0) in two balls with the score on 235-8 before Foo got one that slanted across the right-hander and edged a catch to the Keeper.
Reifer then wrapped up the tail when Nial Smith (2) was caught and bowled as he played too early to a slower ball.
After the early demise of Imlach, Hemraj who slashed the first ball of the innings off the lively Smith for four, Johnson who swept off-spinner Richie Looknauth for four, played some delightful shots to reduce the deficit to 159 with nine wickets in hand by the end of the day.
Play is scheduled to commence at 09:00hrs today.
