Leon Johnson’s XI, on the back of Keon Joseph’s five-wicket haul and Anthony Bramble’s undefeated half-century beat Anthony Adams’ XI by five wickets yesterday on the final day of their first three-day practice match at Providence as defending Champions Guyana Jaguars prepare for next year’s Regional First-Class season which commences on January 9.
West Berbice Fast bowler Joseph captured 5-45, while fellow Berbician left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie supported with 2-33 as Adams’ XI, resuming the final on 73-3 with a lead of 127, were bowled out 68 minutes into the day for 154-9 innings closed, after Nial Smith was force to retire hurt.
Set 202 to win Johnson’s X1 reached 202-5 with Bramble leading the way with an aggressive unbeaten 55 from 49 balls and 49 minutes with eight boundaries.
Bramble added 62 for fourth wicket with Vishaul Singh who stroked a fluent 47 from 88 balls and 118 minutes in an innings which included four fours.
Trevon Griffith who made 26 from 61 balls and 88 minutes and fellow left-hander Chanderpaul Hemraj who reached the boundary three times and cleared it once in his 83-ball and 94-minute 30, had earlier put together 61 for the first wicket as Johnathon Foo captured 3-37 from 20 overs of off-spin, while Ricardo Adams finished with 2-36 in a losing effort.
Scores: Adams’ X1 174 & 154-9 innings closed, Johnson’s X1 127 & 202-5.
When play began in sweltering head on a fairly good track to bat on and a still heavy outfield, Joseph, bowling back-of-length, added three wickets to his two from the previous day.
Overnight batsman Raymond Perez failed to add to his 40, while the other overnight batsman Foo added just eight to his second day 27 after the pair had joined forces on Sunday with their team on 18-3.
Renaldo Ali-Mohammed (27), Ricardo Adams (15) and Anthony Adams (15) all failed to build on starts, while Smith who made 27 in the first innings, was struck on his shoulder by a Chris Barnwell bouncer and the ball was deflected onto the side of his head forcing him to retire.
The Tucber Park pacer was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Center and was in a stable condition yesterday afternoon. However, Jaguars’ physio Neil Barry Jnr informed the player was going through a process of getting back to a full recovery.
When Johnson’s XI began their chase, Griffith and Hemraj carried their team to 28 without loss at Lunch.
After the interval, the 50 was posted as both batsmen looked set before Hemraj hit Foo to cover at 61-1 before Griffith edged Foo to the Keeper one run later.
Johnson also looked good but after reaching the boundary three times in his 18, Foo struck again when the Jaguars Skipper was trapped LBW at 93-3 at Tea.
The left-handed Singh and the pugnacious Barnwell played some enterprising shots before Barnwell, who hit three fours in his 17 got a ball that kept low from Ricardo Adams and was bowled at 126-4.
Bramble continued the positive stroke-play and along with Singh, who favoured the cut were looking untroubled.
But with victory 14 runs away Singh was removed by Ricardo Adams before Bramble and Kevin Sinclair (2) saw their team to victory.
The second and final practice game is scheduled to start on January 3.
