Lower Corentyne emerged champions of the CGI/SBF Petroleum 50-over Franchise League following a 231-run win over Upper Corentyne in their final round game to dethrone defending Champions Essequibo.
Batting first at Cumberland, Lower Corentyne piled up 366-9 with Adrian Sukwah stroking nine fours and five sixes in a top score of 98, while Junior Sinclair made 57 with seven fours.
The pair added 98 for the fifth wicket before Sinclair was lbw to Demetri Cameron, while Sukwah was bowled by Quacy Burnett. Jason Sinclair made 56 including eight fours and one six, Niall Smith got 39, Garfield Benjamin 33 and Jonathan Foo 31.
Cameron claimed 3-59 while Alex Algoo had 2-43. Upper Corentyne responded with 135-7. Algoo scored 56 which contained three fours and two sixes; Junior Sinclair captured 4-39.
Lower Corentyne amassed 25 points from seven matches including five bonus points, the same as Essequibo but the Berbicians, who had two losses each and same amount of bonus points as Essequibo,
took championship honours due to superior net run rate.
West Berbice, West Demerara, East Bank, Georgetown, Upper Corentyne and East Coast took up the next spots in that order.
Led by 333 runs from Jonathon Foo, 244 from West Indies U-19 batsman Kevlon Anderson (ironically the pair were the only batsmen with 100 runs for their team) and eight wickets from five games, including 6-18 against West Berbice from left arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, Lower Corentyne beat Essequibo into the second spot to win the title.
National pacer Neil Smith with 96 runs and Seon Hetmyer, the elder brother West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer, with 92 runs, got the closest to a three-figure aggregate for Lower Corentyne.
Foo got into the 80s on three occasions but failed to get a hundred but did enough to get back into National colours for the first time since 2017. Anderson began with 94 against West Demerara and got into the 40s twice.
Permaul got support from Kelvin Umroa (10) and Junior Sinclair (8).
Tagenarine Chanderpaul scored the most runs with 342 for West Demerara including a century in the final round against Lower Corentyne. The left-handed son of the illustrious Shiv Chanderpaul had three fifties and 46 in the first round.
Essequibo’s Kemol Savory had a couple of 80s in three half-centuries in 336 runs which earned him a maiden call-up for Guyana, while his team mate Quintin Sampson scored 304 runs.
Leon Johnson, who scored 104 against East Bank, was the leading run scorer for Georgetown with 257 runs but Joshua Persaud (150) was the only other batsman from the City Franchise to reach 150 for a team which included Chris Barnwell (147), Robin Bacchus (117) and Steven Jacobs (59).
Vishaul Singh (234), Trevon Griffith, who scored 122 against East Coast, had 220 runs and along with Sherfane Rutherford (213) who made 154 against E’bo, were the only batsmen to reach 200 for East Bank.
Kevin Sinclair, unfortunate not be picked for Guyana but eventually had a wonderful Super50 for Champions WI Emerging Players, got back to back fifties in the last two games to reach 241 runs for West Berbice but no one else reached a three-figure aggregate.
Former Guyana leg-spinner Amir Khan (170) was the only batsman with 100 runs for East Coast, while Alex Algoo scored four half-centuries in 280 runs but only Kandasammy Surujnarine, who got a ton against Georgetown, of the other batsmen reached 155 for Upper Corentyne.
Rutherford, Chanderpaul, Griffith, Johnson and Surujnarine scored centuries on pitches that were not the best for batting.
Gudakesh Motie (18), Trevon France (16), Ashmead Nedd (13), Steven Sankar (13), Griffith (11), Cameron (10), Umroa (10) and Kishram Seyhodan (10) were the bowlers with 10 or more wickets but Smith and Ronsford Beaton bowled with genuine pace.
