Second victim identified by relatives while police pursue motive.
Relatives of the second victim in the horrendous murder in the hotel by the 62 Village beach shore have since identified his body.
He has been identified as Harry Persaud Prashad, 59, of Number 68 Village, Upper Corentyne, Berbice. The other victim who is the owner of the hotel has been identified by his sister as VivekanandBrijbassi called “Vaka”, 71.
Both men’s bodies were found in an advanced state of decomposition by lawmen late Friday afternoon in the upper flat of the Sunsplash Hotel and Bar owned by Brijbassi.
Police confirmed that the men may have been killed approximately a week ago. They were found tied with parts of their bodies hacked off by the perpetrators.
Brijbassi was discovered with two toes missing from his left foot while Prashad was found with his hands tied behind his back to a pole with part of his foot severed from his ankle. The entire building, including the bottom flat, was ransacked giving an indication that the perpetrators may have been looking for something specific, a police source said.
The source also indicated that based on the state in which the men were found “they were tortured for a while”.
Meanwhile, Prashad’s nephew who asked not to be named, told Kaieteur News that they were informed about the incident via the internet around 6:30 Friday afternoon. After making contact with the police they were told that his body was at Bailey’s Funeral Home, West Coast Berbice waiting to be identified. The nephew disclosed that himself and other relatives ventured to the parlour and positively identified his body.
“We recognized the pants he was wearing and he had a scar on his belly from when he did a surgery a few years back.
“He also had a foot issue and he had steel in that foot so we saw that too,” the nephew said.
He added that the last time they saw him was about three weeks ago when he visited them in Port Mourant but since then they did not hear from him.
He disclosed that his uncle lived at Number 68 Village but had started working for Brijbassi and was taking care of the hotel when Brijbassi was out of the country. Prashad had told them that he was comfortable at the hotel taking care of it and spoke of no issue.
However, in an attempt to contact the daughter of Brijbassi, messages were read but no responses were given.
In addition, this publication was informed by a police source that while no arrests have been made they are pursuing a motive in the grisly death of the two elderly men.
Meanwhile, a source close to Brijbassi revealed that there were several break and enters on the building “that cause a lot of problems. That place get a lot of problems. He get a lot of problems with people breaking in there.”
The businessman arrived in Guyana weeks ago and had visited his sister on December 16. They had dinner together but she had her in-laws over so he told her he would be staying at his hotel with two other friends.
It was after his daughters and other relatives could not get in contact with him for several days via phone that they sent a friend from the village to check on him.
When the individual arrived at the location and was making his way into the building he was hit with an overpowering stench. He then decided to leave and return with police. It was then that the police discovered the dismembered decomposed bodies in the upper flat.
Brijbassi had always wanted a hotel by the beach and made it a reality in 2000 when he built it. But after migrating overseas with his wife and kids the business dwindled away.
Years later he decided he was going to revamp it and make it operational again.
