A 27-year-old Linden mechanic was on Tuesday released on a total of $500,000 bail on two charges; driving under the influence and causing death by dangerous driving.
The accused, Corwin Cooper, appeared at the Linden Magistrate’s Court where it was alleged that on December 22, last, he drove motor car PVV 2251 in a manner dangerous to the public, resulting in the death of 78-year-old Juliet Cornelius.
The second charge stated that on the same day, he drove the said motorcar while being under the influence of alcohol.
Cooper was then placed on $450,000 bail for the dangerous driving charge and $50,000 for the DUI. He was also requested to lodge his passport and report regularly to the Wismar Police Station.
Kaieteur News had previously reported that combination of speed and drunk driving allegedly resulted in the death of 78-year-old Linden resident, Juliet Cornelius, of West Watooka, Wismar Linden.
The woman was on her way to church when she was hit by a speeding car, after the driver lost control while negotiating a bend at Burnham Drive, Wismar.
The motor car PVV 2251 involved in the accident is owned by Allan Henry, of Lot 50 Powis Crescent; Amelia’s Ward, Linden but was being driven by 27-year-old Corwin Cooper, a mechanic of the same address.
The woman fell on the roadway, as a result, sustaining injuries about the body. She was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, by public spirited citizens, but succumbed while receiving medical attention.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver for alcohol.
