December has come again and so have the decorations, toys, shopping, cooking and other preparations for Christmas Day. But what is the real meaning of Christmas? Is it just about the colourful lights and decorations that we put in and around our homes, or the presents that we receive f
rom our friends and family?
Over the years the true meaning of Christmas has faded away, since most people have forgotten the reason for the season. They only see Christmas as that time of the year when they do general cleaning around their homes, buy new furniture, appliances, and decorate their surroundings with everything that’s colourful and festive for the season.
Christmas is the season of great joy, a time of healing and renewed strength, peace, love and celebration of the Almighty God’s blessings.
God sent His only begotten son Jesus Christ, into the world that is full of sin. Mary, the wife of Joseph gave birth to Jesus thousands of years ago in a manger on a cold stormy night and that was the beginning of the Christmas story.
The birth of Jesus brought great joy into the world and the reason for Christmas is to celebrate His birth.
According to biblical doctrine, hundreds of years before Jesus was born, God told the prophets that He was sending his son who would die for the sins of mankind and from that moment the prophets knew this was no ordinary baby. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child on the night Jesus was born.
According to the Christmas Story in the Bible, (Luke 2, 1:20) NIV, Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, then to Bethlehem the town of David. Joseph knew he belonged to the house and line of David, so he carried Mary there.
The reason for carrying Mary there was to have her registered. She was pledged to marry Joseph and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
There were shepherds who lived out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. To them an angel of the Lord appeared and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
The angel then told the shepherds, “You will find a baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger.” A great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests.”
When the angels left and went into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told to them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.
There were many questions about the reason for God sending his son. Why did He come? Why did God send his son to this cruel and hard world? And the answer to this was, God sent Jesus to us so that one day, He would grow up to become a very important part of history. His story is one of truth, love, and hope. Through Him salvation was brought to all of us. Without Jesus, we would all die in our sins.
Jesus was born so one day the price could be paid for the things we have done that are wrong. The Bible says (Romans 3:23), “for all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.” We were all born in sin. We do things that do not please God. From the sins of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, we have all inherited that sin nature. In order to have that nature removed is through Jesus.
Jesus came so he could die on the cross for ALL of our sins and if we believe that Jesus died for our sins, we can ask him to come into our hearts and forgive us of all of our sins. After doing that we are clean and made whole and we can know that heaven is a place where we can go to when this life is over.
“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” (1 John 1:9)
For this reason we can truly be happy at Christmas time and no matter what may be happening, we can know that we are his children. We become sons and daughters of God and heaven will be our home one day.
Remove yourself from what has become a norm in our society and take the opportunity this year to invite Jesus into your heart.
Jesus Is The Reason For The Season! Rejoice!
