DEAR EDITOR,
It’s heartbreaking every time I read about multiple deaths, especially resulting from road accidents
in Guyana. They are so prevalent now it seems normal. Those roads are not built for speed, especially 2-way traffic that snakes its way into residential neighbourhoods and shared by pedestrians, bicyclists and donkey carts (still is use?), domestic animals and farm machinery.
The other animals are the speeding drivers racing beyond whatever speed limits are posted and since these are ignored Government is helpless finding a cure. I legally obtained a learner’s permit and had a few lessons but, never a driver’s licence. Those days, it was a pleasure cruising the roads at about 25-30 mph with little traffic to worry about. That was 53 years ago.
The most idiotic and stupid plan by Burnham was to get rid of the trains service throughout the country. The private buses were replaced by Tata. Don’t know how long that lasted as maintenance parts were always missing. It would seem they just walked or drove off the parts store into oblivion. Back to private transportation by regulations – Mini bus. They are not a “bus” by imagination.
Turned out to be killing machines that are wreaking havoc throughout the roads, reducing the population daily. No wonder people are allowed from other countries to move there as replacement. Just wait for that election!
Government always seem to provide transportation for citizens at regulated fares in other countries, either by real buses and trains.
They are much safer and move masses. Those mini-buses are trying to accomplish the impossible by making numerous trips with a loaded time bomb on the roads, which could be termed “THE KILLING FIELDS”.
Note: Used to enjoy that “fish and bread” stop at either Mahaica/Mahaicony riding that train with open window and fresh air blowing through my hair.
