Dear Editor,
A few days ago, a Grove, East Bank Demerara resident complained to me that he was travelling in a bus in the Diamond Housing Scheme, when the driver began turned up his music set. Not only was the music being played loudly, but it was also highly obscene.
The resident alleged that when some of the more senior passengers began to complain, the driver’s response was to order them out of the bus, despite the fact that it was raining.
According to the resident, he also raised his voice in complaint, while threatening to make a report to the police. He alleged that the driver retorted: “This is a (police) Inspector bus,” suggesting that he had no fear of being arrested, once he was driving that bus.
After giving me the licence number of the vehicle, I suggested to the resident that he make a report at the Golden Grove (Diamond) Police Station.
When I checked with him the following day, he informed me that he had visited the station, but had not given a statement because there were many people there, and he had a business to run.
I contacted a senior police official, who instructed that the passenger return to the station and give a statement. The passenger agreed to do just that, but when I called him the following afternoon, he told me that he had not given a statement.
“I does drive truck, and I frighten police,” was his explanation.
I reminded the resident that I had constantly heard him complain about the lawless state of the country, and this was an opportunity for him to make a difference. Nothing I could say would make him change his mind.
Editor, after last week’s horrendous crash at Mahaicony, many have been calling for intervention from the churches and the police.
But the blame clearly lies with the passengers, since it appears that not one of them raised their voice to rebuke that reckless bus driver, but rather, behaved like silly, silent sheep, like the guy in Grove, who is afraid to file a complaint against a driver who boasts that he drives “an Inspector’s bus”.
Yours respectfully,
Michael Jordan
