The second annual KFC Goodwill Football Tournament for under-18 school teams will culminate this evening at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground, Carifesta Avenue, where Annai Secondary of region nine will match skills will Georgetown’s Lodge Secondary from 19:00hrs for championship honours.
Inaugural champions, Shiva boys’ Hindu College of Trinidad & Tobago (T&T), saw their perfect record in this competition’s history coming to an end on Friday night after running into a stumbling block in the Lodge School that were cheered on by the partisan crowd that consisted mainly of region seven supporters.
Fresh off their triumph in the Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers under-18 schools football league, Lodge Secondary found themselves defending mostly during their win against the Trinidadians, which was achieved via kicks from the penalty mark after full and extra-time had expired 0-0.
Lodge’s goalkeeper, Rashad ‘Shadow’ Roberts, managed to stay focused after being bombarded by Shiva boys’ who clashed with him on a few instances in the match and in the penalty shootout, ‘Shadow’ saved the first penalty to put pressure on the visitors who went on to miss their next three penalty kicks.
Meanwhile, in the opening seminal fixture on Friday, Annai Secondary of region nine bettered DC Caesar Fox (Waramadong) Secondary of region seven 2-1 to reach the final.
Lodge Secondary, 2019 Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers league champions, will play Annai in tonight’s final.
Annai’s Vito Cambridge found the back of the net in the first minute of play before Ovid Andrews equalised for Waramadong, much to the delight of his team’s large group of supporters, eight minutes later.
The evenly matched game between the two sides that travelled some distance continued with some enterprising plays but it wasn’t until the second half, in the 65th minute that Raul Sway banged in the decisive goal from open play for Annai.
Today’s third place playoff, which will feature Shiva boys’ and Waramadong at 17:00hrs will be equally as exciting as the final since both sides could’ve potentially made it to final due to the fact that all the teams appeared to be evenly matched in the semifinal round.
Troy Mendonca, co-director of the Petra Organisation (the promoters of the tournament), during an invited comment on Friday evening thanked all the sponsors of this competition, which he pledged will continue to grow bigger and better each year.
A source close to the sport promotion group revealed that next year could see an increase from six to eight teams.
A visible absence of representatives from the executive and technical level of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) was noted during Friday semifinal round and also during the round-robin stage of this competition that could serve as a scouting ground for the GFF to potentially boost their chances at next year’s FIFA under-20 qualifiers, slated to begin in February.
