11 West Indians in IPL 2020
By Sean Devers
Young Warriors, Berbice, Guyana and West Indies left-hander Shimron Hetmyer will turn 23 on Boxing Day but he has received an early Birthday and Christmas gift all wrapped in one package.
Shimron Hetmyer celebrates his century in India and was soon celebrating his US$1.1 million IPL contract.
Sheldon Cottrell and his trademark celebration as fellow IPL Millionaire Shimron Hettmyer come to congratulate him.
The dashing and pugnacious stroke-maker was this week given a US$1.1million contract by Delhi Capital to play in 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Last season he played for the Virat Kholi led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) but was released after failing to reach 100 runs in five matches despite making a half century.
However, a magnificent match winning century against Kholi’s men in the first ODI was well rewarded by the most lucrative franchise in the world.
While Hetmyer is yet to reach a three-figure score from 16 Tests and his highest score is 52 in twenty T20 matches for the West Indies which he made in first T20I against India, Hetmyer has registered five tons from 42 ODIs in his favorite format.
With 143 runs from the two ODIs against India after being run out for four in the second ODI, Hetmyer has a last chance of scoring his sixth ODI ton for the year, today in the third and final match in the three-match series which stands 1-1.
Hetmyer is back to his best form and would want to score heavily against his ‘old’ team the only team without a West Indian.
He has scored 1,033 runs with a century and five fifties from 50 T20 games with most of those runs coming in Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Hetymer is one of three Guyanese in the 2020 IPL and among 11 from the West Indies and one of two Caribbean players to be bought for US$ Million.
Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and West Indies left-arm pacer Sheldon Cotterell is the highest paid West Indian player; earing US$ 1.2 Million to play for Kings X1 Punjab, who has the most West Indians in their team with Chris Gayle and Nicolas Pooran also included.
Guyana’s 21-year-old Sherfane Rutherford from the East Coast of Demerara has been picked by Mumbai Indians, while his countryman 21-year-old Essequibian Keemo Paul will join Hetmyer at Delhi Capital.
Mumbai Indians are the defending IPL Champions and the thirteenth edition has eight teams. The 2020 IPL is set to commence on April 1 and runs up to May 31 with the grand finale.
The West Indians in the IPL: Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Sheldon Cotterell, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicolas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Keemo Paul, Sherfane Rutherford, Kiron Pollard and Oshane Thomas.
