The Black Brick Road Art & Music Show that took place in the U.S. state of Georgia was a breakthrough success. It featured forty pieces of art, inclusive of acrylic paintings, pen and ink drawings, and book illustrations from the Guyanese supernatural novel, “Kamarang” by Michael Jordan. All the pieces were done by Guyanese writer and artist, Harold A. Bascom.
The event, held at the DSW Studio, in Decatur, Georgia, last Sunday, was, by every account, a lesson on Guyana, its culture, and the talent that emanates from it. The close-to-100 attendees, mostly African Americans, were fascinated.
The show was teachable, in the light of its prominent ‘art tours’ feature, in which the artist explained his pieces and welcomed questions and comments from the crowd.
And the audience was with him. They asked questions and made comments about the artist’s work that were, at times, even teachable to the artist himself.
When he began explaining the illustrations for Michael Jordan’s supernatural novel, “Kamarang”, the crowd was wide-eyed in awe. But what was most outstanding, was the talk Bascom gave before his pen and ink drawings entitled, “The Guyana Gothic Series,” which featur
ed six Guyanese folklore figures, namely, Bacoo, Ol’ Higue, Kanaima, Jombie, Water People, and Moon gazer.
Bascom became the consummate storyteller he is, and the listeners were riveted. It was doubtful, afterwards, that the audience at this art show could continue saying that all they know about Guyana, is that the Jonestown Massacre took place there in 1978.
The Black Brick Road Art and Music Show, produced by Damali Bascom, featuring the work of her father, Harold, was a small success in its own right; small, in that it was a first-time effort; but from the support it received, it’s likely to become an annual event.
