“Our confidence if high, we know about winning, we know what it takes to win, we know what it takes to be champions and we’re going to work hard on that.”
Den Amstel, GFF Super 16 champs 2018-2019 – Flashback! Den Amstel will begin the defence of their title against Riddim Squad tonight at Leonora.
The words of Head Coach of the GFF Super 16 defending champions Den Amstel Football Club O’Neil Heywood yesterday, ahead of the opening match of their title defence today against Riddim Squad, a team they would be meeting for the first time in any competition.
This scenario prompted Coach Heywood to adjust the focus of his charges as they would be very cautious against the GFA side and aggressive when the need arise. While Den Amsel would have lost a number of players during the last transfer window, Heywood is of the belief that he still has players (mixture of youth and experience) in his team who can deliver the goods for them.
The home fans are expected to be out in their numbers to support their side like they did for last year’s tournament which culminated on January 1st this year at the Buxton Community Center Ground when they lifted the championship trophy.
Den Amstel would be banking on the efforts of Leo Lovell, goalkeeper Ryan Hunte, Andre Hector, Dwayne Wilson, Rondel Hutson, Gideon Payne, Keanu Lawrence and Marvin Frank among others to deliver a win tonight.
Riddim Squad on the other hand, will have to come prepared to take the fight to the GFF Elite League side knowing that the flow of the tournament to date shows that the Regional Member Association clubs have not been able to get past their Elite League opponents.
Their Head Coach, Shawn Maloney would be banking on the likes of Lyliton Ramsay, Rawl Ramsay, Orville and Derwin Stewart, Kevin Gordon, Kevin Agard, Sceyon Hope, Capela Daniels and Dwayne O’Riley among others to craft a win for them.
Santos Football Club (SFC) will start as favourites in their clash against Eagles Football Club in the penultimate match of the round-of-16 from 18:30hrs this evening not only as an Elite League side but due to the fact that they boast one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
Outside of their two guest players, Alex Murray and Sheldon Holden Holder, they have in their regular team, Kester Jacobs, Kevin Dundas, Dwayne St. Kitts, Orin Yarde, Ryan Dowding, Marcus Wilson, Job Caesar, Daniel Ross, Rondell Peters and Jermaine Padmore who would be working in tandem to carve out a win.
Eagles FC, the West Demerara Football Association leading side would have their work cut out against this Santos line up but they {Eagles} have been used to taking on opponents who are higher in the pecking order than them and have been upsetting them.
While the Santos test would be a stern one, Eagles would be backing themselves to put up a good fight and possibly upset the apple carts by coming away with a victory; time will tell. They’ll hope for a more than fantastic team performance from the following players: Keron Schmidt, Jalen Williams, Joel Ferrier, Jewel Stephen, Deron Harvey, Delon Clarke, Orette Stephenson, Stephen Bentick, Jason St. Hill, Ron Bobb, Ortega Bobb, Seon Miller, Adrian Adelpha along with guess players, Kevin Duke, Seon Bobb and Sherwin Bernard.
