The GFF Elite League teams have continued to dominate proceedings in the 2019/2020 edition of the GFF Super 16 Cup knockout tournament which continued on Friday night last before a sizable crowd at the Beterverwagting Community Ground, East Coast Demerara.
Fruta Conquerors’ Delon Lanferman opens his team’s account in the 4th minute, Buxton Stars’ GK Nevaldo Gulliver fails to save stop the ball.
In the feature match, Buxton United made light work of New Amsterdam United trouncing them 6-1, while in the opening clash, Fruta Conquerors took care of Buxton Stars 4-0; both teams have now earned quarterfinal dates, Fruta Conquerors will collide with Milerock on Christmas Day with Buxton United coming up against the winner of last night’s match between the GDF FC and Mainstay Gold Star which was played in Essequibo.
Buxton United, like Fruta Conquerors were the dominant team on the park and, New Amsterdam had one great flambouyant moment when they pulled one back through a ripper of a shot off the boot of Jamal Butts in the 27th minute, the score was 2-1 then.
It was the only bright spark for the lads from the east who lacked the punch that was needed in the attacking third to halt the many raids of the united Buxtonians. Leading the goal spree for Buxton United was Dillon Wright with a hat-trick, the first for this year’s tournament.
The nippy Wright did not do anything wrong on the night and found the back of the nets in the 20th, 45th and 57th minutes. He was well supported by the young and diminutive Omari Glasgow who tapped in a double in the 10th and 74th minutes.
The other goal was scored by second half (63rd minute) substitute Samuel Johnson in the 84th minute. Both teams made four substitutions, New Amsterdam United making their first in the opening half; all others were made in the second half.
Buxton Stars did not shine on the night as Fruta Conquerors, in their quest to add this championship to their Elite League title romped to an easy win. The Fruta guys controlled play by moving the ball around the park as they stamped their authority in every department.
The young brigade for Conquerors led the charge for victory with Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett tapping in a brace in the 50th and 82nd minutes. Delon Lanferman opened the scoring in the 4th minute; the other goal was banged in by Nicholas Mc Arthur in the 62nd minute.
The quarterfinals line-up would be decided tonight when the final round-of-16 matches takes place at the Leonora Track and Field Facility; Santos tackle Eagles FC of Stewartville in the opener at 18:30hrs with the main match between the defending champions, Den Amstel and the East Bank based Georgetown Football Association club, Riddim Squad.
