A taxi driver who allegedly had a quantity of narcotics stuffed in the panel of the trunk of his car has been remanded to jail.
The man, Jamal Arjune, 28, of Lot 16 Mount Sinai, West Canje, Berbice appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Blairmont Magistrate Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. He was charged with being in possession of 5,036 grams of marijuana.
He was remanded to jail until January 9th when the matter will continue in the Weldaad Magistrate’s Court.
According to the police, on December 10, last, the police were conducting a roadblock exercise on Weldaad Public Road, West Coast Berbice, when they stopped a white Toyota Allion motor car bearing registration HD 307 and driven by Arjune.
The vehicle had three other persons inside, including a woman who is a known drug dealer and a close friend of the driver; her 16-year-old son and her 18-year-old daughter in law.
A search was conducted on the occupants but nothing was found. The police further searched the vehicle in the presence of the occupants and five bulky transparent plastic bags containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, was found in the trunk panel.
The occupants were told of the findings, cautioned and arrested. The suspected cannabis was taken to Weldaad Police Station where it was tested and weighed and found to be some five kilograms.
They all denied knowledge of the narcotics. Arjune was subsequently charged.
