DEAR EDITOR,
The decision by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to verify the 20,000 names of new registrants emanating from the House-to-House registration is a positive step.
This will certainly help in terms of voter confidence and the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.
It is now for the GECOM Secretariat to put in place the necessary mechanisms to ensure that the field verification exercise is completed within the timeframe allocated.
Elections must not only be free and fair but must be seen to be free and fair. It is the responsibility and duty of GECOM to ensure that there is free, fair and transparent elections in Guyana. This most recent decision by GECOM is a step in that direction.
