Captain of Elite League side Milerock, Rawle ‘Boney man’ Gittens, a seasoned campaigner, has stated that he is pleased with the performance of his side following their 2-0 win over City side Pele in the first match of this year’s GFF Super 16 Cup which kicked off on Sunday last at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
Rawle Gittens about to greet Minister within the Ministry of the Presidency, with responsibility for Youth Affairs, Hon. Simona Broomes in the presence of GFF President, Wayne Forde.
It was not all smooth sailing for the Upper Demerara based club as Pele held them at bay for 51 minutes before they were able to break the deadlock. Clearly the more oiled unit on the day, Gittens informed that his team would have been putting in a lot of work in preparing for the competition.
“As a senior campaigner with the youngsters I must feel pleased to jump this first hurdle, we will go back to the table now and correct our mistakes because we know going to the quarter finals would not be easy.”
For their quarter final match-up, Milerock awaits the winner of the Fruta Conquerors vs Buxton Stars clash which would be played out this Friday.
Gittens took the time to thank his young colleagues and the Technical staff for the work they collectively put into making the result a reality.
He also commended the young Pele side for their resilience but he believes that his side was the better of the two on the night.
Looking ahead, Gittens proffered the view that his team would have to improve on their finishing as well as their defending: “And I feel we have a good chance of progressing further in the competition. I would grade the team about 60 to 65% but we still have a lot more work to do because I know we can reach to 90% and cause a lot of upsets in this tournament.
