By Franklin Wilson
The 2019/2020 edition of the Guyana Football Federation Super 16 Cup kicked off in style on Sunday night last at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary. Walking the plank were Timehri Panthers and Pele going down to the Guyana Police Force Football Club and Milerock Football Club,

respectively.
Like they had boasted before, that Timehri Panthers did not stand a chance, the Police Force romped to an emphatic 6-2 win but while the score line looked impressive, the young Panthers did give a good account of themselves but the experience of the Law Enforcement team made the difference in the end.
The competition’s opening match saw the Linden based Milerock getting past Pele 2-0 as the Elite League teams dominated on night one. Police did not have to endure too much of a wait to stamp their authority against the East Bank #1 team.
It was in the 10th minute of play that Jamal Harvey netted the first of his double, Police, not wanting Timehri to settle and get comfortable. The game was fast paced and flowing throughout which resulted in Timehri making errors in the defensive third which were pounced upon by Police.
Harvey would complete his brace in the 21st minute which further increased the odds against the East Bank side in terms of bouncing back even as they had a few shots on goal; their goalkeeper, Kellon Major looked sharp between the uprights bringing off a few excellent saves. His opposite number also denied
the Panthers on a few occasions.
Police would establish a comfortable 3-0 cushion before the half time whistle, Colwyn Adams tucking a shot past Major in the 24th minute. It would have always been a high mountain to cross with Police building up such a commanding lead so early on.
But despite being behind, the Panthers never gave up as they kept battling. Police tapped in the first of three more goals in the second half when Daniel Wilson fired home in the 52nd minute. The Panthers were finally able to get on the score sheet when Lloyd Matthews scored in the 60th minute.
But four minutes later, Police restored their four-goal cushion with a Darren Benjamin strike and ten minutes later, Trayon Bobb, who was named the player-of-the-match finally got one of his own.
Timehri’s second goal came off the boot of Jarel Walcott in the 75th minute. They could have gotten a third but Captain Shanon Samnauth sprayed his second attempt wide of the upright after he scored the first but it was ordered retaken by the Referee.
Police have now earned themselves a quarter final place and will play the winner of the Western Tigers vs Rivers View match-

up (Saturday Dec, 21st in Bartica) on Christmas Day.
Milerock found the going tough against a young Pele team and could not break the deadlock until the second half. The GFF Elite League side, much more active than the City side, had to pull on all their experience to secure the win.
Jose Depaz and veteran Rawle Gittens, Captain of the team scored in the 51st and 59th minutes to formalise the win and their place in the final eight (Christmas Day) when they will take on the winner of the Fruta Conquerors vs Buxton Stars clash set for this Friday, December 20th.
Meanwhile, the competition was officially kicked off by Minister within the Ministry of the Presidency, with responsibility for Youth Affairs, Hon. Simona Broomes in the presence of GFF President, Wayne Forde.
Both dignitaries met the players of Milerock and Pele, wished and them well before the action got cracking. This weekend will present three days of fierce battles at various venues including Bartica and Essequibo.
