Topp XX upset Botafago 1-0, Coomacka down Net Rockers 2-1, two games on tonight
There were two shocking results to kick off this year’s 7th GT Beer Christmas championship being staged by the Upper Demerara Football Association in Linden as Topp XX needled their way past Botafago, while unknown Coomacka upset highly ranked Net Rockers 2-1 at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
To get the tournament off to a surprise start Topp XX would steal the advantage when veteran Travis Waterton with his trade mark shooting found the back of the net from a free kick awarded in the 26th minute. That goal would be the lone one of the game and when the final whistle came it was Topp XX earning a big win in their group play and putting themselves in a position to advance.
The other game would also produce an unlikely victory as Coomacka would first shock Net Rockers with an early goal through a 6th minute strike off the boot of Jamal Whyte. That early setback would only be nullified through a second half effort from the experienced Denzil Pryce in the 68th minute.
From then it was a tough affair and when regulation play ended it was 1-1. In the extra period of play Coomacka would gain the lead once more from a shot taken by Kenston Thom that would prove the decider as Botafago were unable to level the scores and the result would see Coomacka gaining an important win.
Game one tonight is in Group B as Winners Connection face Hi Stars from 19:00hrs and the other brings together Group C action when Aroaima collude with Amelia’s Ward Panthers from 21:00hrs.
