The Guyana Energy Agency has released an invitation for sealed bids for the provision of consultancy services for environment assessment and management plan for Ikuribisi one megawatt Hydropower Project.
The proposed Ikuribisi Hydropower Project entails the installation of a one megawatt hydropower plant and construction of a transmission line between the plant and the Bartica Power station.
This assessment is expected to ensure that the environmental implications of the project are analyzed and understood prior to commencement.
The power system is expected to run as an energy storage plant with a reservoir, which can serve as a seasonal storage system, hence limiting power outages. The site for this project is in the town of Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The project will provide electricity from a renewable energy source to serve the demands of Bartica, since the town is considered the gateway to the interior locations.
In addition to hydropower, a 1.5 MW solar farm is being developed to displace diesel generators. The hydropower plant will add additional capacity to the grid to meet the town’s growing demand which currently ranges from 2 MW to 3 MW.
Additionally, environment assessments offer guidance during the permitting phase of projects and ensure that the installation, operation and decommissioning of assets doesn’t have significant effects on the environment.
This project forms a collection of energy initiatives to support the ‘Green Bartica Development Plan’.
The plan, which is an initiative of the Ministries of the Presidency and Communities, involves a holistic approach to sustainable economic growth in the township.
