All roads lead to the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary today where the first two teams will walk the plank or be booted from the 2019/2020 edition of the GFF Super 16 championship, when the dust is settled on the first of eight days of battle.
All systems are in place for what is anticipated to be an exciting evening of football and despite the fact that both Milerock and the Guyana Police Force are Elite League teams taking on Regional Member Association opponents, the David vs Goliath match ups can very well have endings similar to that of the bible story.
Police for that matter has already boasted that their opponents, Timehri Panthers in this evening’s main attraction, does not stand a chance but on the day, the vital stats reveal that it would be 11 vs 11 using the same ball to get the better of each other. Whichever team can put together the best combative plan is likely to emerge as the victor and book a place in the quarter finals.
Police boasts the likes of Trayon Bobb (Guest player) who will combine efforts with Pernel Schultz, Daniel Wilson, Jermain Junor, Trevon Lythcott and Jamal Harvey among others under the guidance of Coach Dwain Babb.
Former National player, Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite has been guiding the technical and tactical development of Timehri Panthers and would relish this platform to showcase his charges development.
While his side is a relatively young one, Braithwaite, no stranger to this level of rivalry would no doubt have a point to prove and fans can look forward to a keen tussle between the home team and the East Bank side which features the likes of the Khan brothers, Tyrone and Tyrell, Tyrone Burnette, Ishmael Pulsaram, Shanon Samnauth along with guest players, Kelon Major, Lloyd Matthews and Colin Seymour.
Today’s curtain raiser from 18:30hrs pits a former knock-out artist in Pele FC against Milerock. The latter team would start as favourite given the fact that they have been playing in the GFF Elite League.
But while Pele would not have been that active, like Timehri Panthers, they would not have any pressure on them so it is anticipated that the youths they would be featuring would come out and give it their all.
Coach Dennis ‘Cow’ Hunte did not reveal his guest players but did say that Lodge High School’s Captain Derwin George, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers School League in leading his team to the championship title, would lead Pele’s charge in this re-building phase of the club.
Over four million in cash and prizes are up for grabs, the teams in contention are defending champions Den Amstel, Buxton United, Rivers View (Bartica), Western Tigers, Santos, Riddim Squad, Guyana Defence Force, Mainstay Gold Star (Essequibo), Eagles FC (West Demerara), Fruta Conquerors, Buxton United and New Amsterdam United.
Sponsors on board to date are MACORP, Pegasus Hotel Guyana, HJ 94.1, THAG, Extra Beer & Extra Energy, Impressions, Sleep Inn Hotel, MP Sports, BASIF, NAMILCO and ECV Investments Ltd.
