Police ranks take an oath to uphold the law. But it appears as though some of them clearly have no respect for regulations governing the roadways.
It was recently revealed that police ranks are the cause of 22 out of 42 road accident victims to be hospitalised at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)
Though the accidents were not fatal, victims are still lying in the Georgetown Public Hospital; some of them have been deprived of making an honest living as they can no longer work due to the nature of their injuries.
They are calling for justice; for these “speeding” cops to be found and prosecuted.
Traffic Chief, Linden Isles, has heard their cries. In fact, the Traffic Chief, himself, visited the hospital where he interacted with the victims. And, he has vowed that Justice will prevail.
Speaking with several accident victims last Friday from their bedsides, the patients said that they were at wits to get their issues addressed.
The victims complained that they believe that their matters will go cold as no one from the police force is checking up on them regularly.
An accident victim, 32-year-old Bonita Brown, of South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown recalled that on November 2, last, she was struck down by a speeding police officer while standing in the vicinity of Mandela Avenue waiting on transportation.
The woman said that after the accident, police ranks visited her at the medical facility to check up on her recovery. However that was only done for a week.
“When someone gets involved in an accident it is not something easy to go through. I does get sleepless nights due to the amount of pain I am feeling. Before my accident, I used to work as a security guard, but now I can’t do that because my job required long standing up…
“I cannot stand long on my feet anymore because my back would hurt,” she explained.
Another accident victim, 52-year-old Anthony Matthews, stated that he also was struck down by a police rank while on his way to work on November 14, 2019. The man resides a Lot 44 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Relating the circumstances surrounding the accident to this publication, Matthews stated that on the said date around 06:15 hrs, he was standing on the Diamond Public road waiting on transportation to head to work when the accident occurred.
“I deh standing on the road stopping minibuses to see which one would take me to town, and then one of the minibus stop. After the bus stop I had to cross the road to get into the bus. But while crossing the road this police officer on a yellow motorbike came from behind this bus and ride straight into me.”
Matthews continued that after the accident, he was admitted at the GPHC for five days before he was discharged. However after being discharged from the hospital, he still continues to feel intense pain in his lower abdomen and would usually visit the medical facility to receive treatment.
According to Matthews, after the accident police ranks visited his home and assured him that he would receive justice.
However, this has not been the case. According to him, it has been weeks since he has received a visit from anyone in the police force. Due to the pain he is feeling, he was recently re-admitted to the hospital.
Another typical case is that a 42-year-old Campbellville, Georgetown, resident Donna Clarke. The woman was alleged struck down by a police officer on May 15, 2019, in the vicinity of Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown, around 19:30hrs.
The woman, whose right leg was fractured in four places, said when the policeman struck her down, he skidded and ended up hitting three other persons. She claims the cop was speeding.
Those persons were reportedly treated at the same hospital and sent away. The woman underwent three surgeries on her leg.
She also had to undergo a corrective surgery on her upper right thigh due to the pain she was feeling in the area. Due to the impact the woman thigh was punctured and pus had started to form in the open area.
Although the woman was discharged from the hospital, she was readmitted as she could not cope with the pain.
The woman said that after the accident police ranks visited her at the city hospital and would at times take baskets of food stuff for her.
“I did not ask them for foodstuff, I want justice and up to a day like today I did not receive that. And I believed that because it was one of they own ranks that struck me down. I will not get justice but what I know that with all bad things that happened there is a GOD and he is watching everyone.”
The accident victims believe that their road to justice is a long one ahead.
