The Iwokrama International Centre (IIC) for Rain Forest Conservation and Development has given the Ministry of Public Infrastructure the go ahead for the Linden-Lethem Road project.
The Ministry of Public Infrastructure had been awaiting approval by the Iwokrama International Centre before any activities could have been undertaken, since part of the proposed area where works are to be conducted is primarily located in the protected Iwokrama Forest.
The Iwokrama International Centre was established in 1996 under a joint mandate from the Government of Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretariat to manage the Iwokrama forest.
The Iwokrama Act states: “Subject to Section 6 (1), and not withstanding anything in any other written law—(a) no mining, forestry or other resources utilisation activity shall be carried out on the Programme Site by any person other than the Centre, except with the prior written permission of the Centre; and (b) no lease of land or permission to use in the Programme Site shall be issued by any person other than the Centre, and all activities on the Programme Site shall be in accordance with regulations prescribed therefore under this Act”.
Previous concerns were raised as it relates to disturbing the habitat of some wildlife in the area, however, the Ministry indicated that the road project will foster development within the hinterland regions, reduce transportation cost, boost tourism, create employment and provide ease of access to Brazil. The bridge will be built at the Kurupakari crossing to link the Linden-Lethem road overland.
The road project will be funded by a grant from the United Kingdom, supported by a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank.
