Dec 11, 2019 Letters
Tuesday December 9, 2019 was Human Rights Day, the 71st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ adoption by the UN General Assembly.
Youth Standing Up for Human Rights’ is this year’s theme, in recognition of a year marked by the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and to highlight the leadership role of youth in collective movements as a source of inspiration for a better future.
One of the key features is the obligation, to ensure the best interests of the child is the primary consideration in all their legislation, policy and practice – governments have clearly failed in this given the shocking numbers of children living in conditions of poverty, even as they continue to increase military spending.
Yours,
