Guyana and West Indies fast bowler Ronsford Beaton was sent home during the recently concluded Regional Super50 in Trinidad due to an illegal bowling action. But it was discovered that the 27-year-old Beaton was reported for a suspect action during a CGI 50-over Franchise game in Berbice.
Beaton was easily the quickest bowler in the Franchise League which was used to select the National team for the Super50. According to a Berbician Umpire, he reported Beaton’s action to the Match Referee but the GCB took no action and picked the Essequibo fast bowler for the Super50.
When asked why he did not call ‘no ball’ since the amended ‘No Ball Law’ gives the Umpires the power to do so, he said “What we do is record the over and ball suspected and notify the Match Referee.” The senior Umpire informed that Beaton was absolutely ridiculous with his action.
He added that even a senior Coach (name given) said he was ‘trying with him’ but never got to complete his task. When contacted about the report and the alleged inaction, a GCB source said Umpires now have the power to call and signal No Balls on the spot for suspect actions and if the player ‘throws’ again suspend him from bowling for the rest of the innings.
The GCB source also added that for a report to be deemed official the Umpires have to follow a process which includes signing a special report form for suspect actions which is given to all of the Match Referees and Umpires assigned to the tournament.
The GCB source said that Umpires did not sign that form since it is required that all Umpires in the match sign the form. The last time Beaton was banned, Cricket West Indies (CWI) paid for his remedial work since he was representing West Indies.
In the latest instance Beaton, was banned in a CWI tournament but he was playing for Guyana and the GCB could not say who would pay the cost. Beaton, who has played two ODI’s, has had problems with his bowling action during his career and was reported during the Super50 game against United States but was allowed to play the next three games.
Beaton was previously suspended from bowling after being reported during an ODI against New Zealand in December 2017. He was cleared to return to playing international cricket in August 2018, after his remodeled action was assessed at Loughborough University in England on August 13, 2018.
It was revealed that the amount of elbow extension for all his deliveries was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations. Beaton will undergo an evaluation of his action which CWI has arranged for an independent assessment of the bowling action to be done.
“Video footage of his latest infringement was sent to Loughborough University in the United Kingdom for an opinion report in accordance with the CWI Regulations for Dealing with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions.”
Beaton, who was born in the Volcano hit Island of Montserrat, has played 33 First-Class, 38 List A and 48 T20 matches.
