Dear Editor,
Like many who have lived a long time in the unique and peaceful village of Chateau Margot, on the East Coast of Demerara, I have developed a love for the historic chimney that the French built during colonial days.
I share the views made by Mrs. Persaud’s letter which read “A few weeks ago, residents walking past the Chimney site saw, to their dismay, neatly lettered sign boards attached to both gates of the enclosed area. One read “NADIA GARDENS HOUSING DEVELOPMENT INC, Chateau Margot ‘’. The name of the administrator is given and his phone numbers. And the other, on the locked gate leading directly to the Chimney proclaims “Private Property, Trespassers will be prosecuted. No animals allowed. Animals will be impounded as per law WARNING: THIS COMPOUND IS SPRAYED WITH POISONS. They are dangerous to animals. For information call the Administrator …”
Several resident also do share their concern about that notice on the front large iron gate.
We therefore respectfully ask those in authority to make known publicly what would be the fate of that historic monument. Is it still owned by our Government, or is it in the hands of a private citizen? And if it is in the hands of private citizen, what would be the fate of that local, national and even international monument?
Yours respectfully
Rooplall Dudhnath
