Mere weeks after the University of Guyana appointed a new Chancellor, the Administration is currently embarking on advertising for a replacement Vice-Chancellor and Principal following Prof. Ivelaw Griffith’s disinterest in having his contract renewed.
According to a statement released on June 17, 2019 by the University’s Administration, “The University Council accepted his withdrawal and hereby notifies the public that as of June 14, 2019, Professor Griffith, who is at present on terminal leave, shall cease to be Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana.”
According to a release by the university, a decision in accordance with the terms and conditions of his contract, Prof. Griffith was sent on terminal leave. Earlier, the Ministry of Education requested a forensic audit into the university’s spending. This request came after numerous protests in the face of claims of ‘misappropriation’ of UG funds.
Professor Griffith was appointed the 10th Principal and Vice Chancellor of UG in June 2016.
Ahead of assuming the UG Vice Chancellor position, Professor Griffith served as Executive-in-Residence at The University at Albany, State University of New York, and the Ninth President of Fort Valley State University in Georgia, where he led the right-sizing of the educational and economic enterprise, focusing on growing enrollment, enhancing the academic profile, controlling spending, launching Honours and Undergraduate Research programmes, and initiating a feasibility study to establish a School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation.
The new Chancellor, Prof. Edward Greene, former UN Special Envoy and CARICOM Deputy Secretary General, Greene was appointed during this year’s Convocation on November 16, 2019.
