New York-based Guyanese, Dimple Willabus, is taking her advocacy for youth development and community service another step further with a campaign for New York City Council.
The coverage area in Southern Brooklyn’s Coun
cil District 46 is home to thousands of Guyanese. However, while many Guyanese reside in there, the district is very diverse.
The campaign is set to host a launch and fundraiser on Thursday, December 12 at 6:30 pm at the Rishavena Center, 2260 Flatbush Ave. Brooklyn NY. This event will give residents a first-hand opportunity to hear Willabus’ plans for the district and engage in a community meet and greet, while fundraising for the campaign.
According to her website, Willabus migrated from Guyana and made Brooklyn her home since 2003.
Ever since then, she has observed the development in various neighbourhoods, but also witnessed instances where citizens have been excluded from the same level of opportunity, because they were not part of the “social elite.”
Willabus is committed to addressing the needs of the community and all of its members. According to her website, she is focused on ensuring that all groups have an opportunity to become empowered and contributing members of our society.
While education has been a hallmark of her agenda, she is well aware that resources and services must be available to a wider array of the community and the greater diaspora, who call Brooklyn home.
Her passion for community service is premised on a desire to ensure that the disenfranchised, the foreign-born, and the overlooked, all receive the access and opportunity promised to them by virtue of being in our community.
Willabus has noted that “youth and senior services, small business development, transportation alternatives and quality of life improvement programs are all paramount to her agenda for improving our community!
“It’s time for our community to have a leader who will listen to the voices of the people, before they “speak for the people.”
Willabus went on to emphasize her campaign’s platform on various subject areas, “We will reclaim our community by putting people first, increasing educational funding, creating better youth & senior services, improving social programs and creating economic growth through small business development.”
Willabus is a wife and mother of three who stays true to her virtues of hard work, compassion and family values, which were instilled in her at an early age through a Guyanese upbringing which plays an important role in how she views community work.
This community advocate holds a Master’s Degree in Media Studies from Brooklyn College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism. Her experience in that field dates back 24 years to Guyana where she was well known as Dimple Singh for hosting the pioneer TV program ‘Rhythm Nation.”
The Rhythm Nation Entertainment brand partners with CEO’s, organizations, entrepreneurs and various government entities, to grow their personal and professional brands and to maximize their effectiveness within their selected industry.
Willabus also has nearly 25 years in the media, marketing, and entertainment industry providing her professional expertise to a wide array of organizations and brands.
Willabus achieved success by teaming with various business and professional entities, including: Light Switch Learning, Justice Clothing, Sussman Publishing, Investors Bank, as well as, numerous entertainment industry professionals and elected officials.
