Sisters from Number 36 Village, Corentyne, Berbice yesterday appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Peter Hugh to answer to several charges, all of which they pleaded not guilty to.
Charged are Hemwattie “Mona” Singh, 28, and Yasminie “Tina” Ramsew, 22 of Lot 3 Number 36 Village. The sisters were yesterday placed on $50,000 bail each.
Singh who stood in the prisoner’s dock was slapped with charges of damage to the property of Traffic Constable Umkar Suknanand, his cellphone worth $190,000 and assaulting him along the Port Mourant Public Road.
She was also charged with disorderly behaviour, resisting arrest by a peace officer at Rose Hall Outpost and assaulting Police female Constable Parks.
Ramsew, on the other hand, was charged with dangerous driving resulting in an accident; failing to stop after an accident, failure to report the accident, resisting arrest, disorderly behaviour and assaulting female Constable Parks at the Rose Hall Town Outpost. According to the facts of the case, Ramsew drive motor vehicle PTT 6628 with Singh as the occupant in a manner dangerous to the public, resulting in a collision with motorcar PLL 9377. Ramsew then, reportedly fled the scene with a police patrol giving chase. The police eventually caught up with Ramsew along the Port Mourant Public Road. All occurred on December 3, last.
Ramsew, however, claimed in court that she was assaulted by Constable Parks at the Rose Hall Town Outpost and has a medical certificate to show for it. Her sister who made no mention in court that she was assaulted, said that she was, after the case had ended and while she was making her way out of the courtyard. She stated that she was hospitalised for two days.
Magistrate Hugh, considering the allegation made by Ramsew, ordered that a probe be launched to address the allegations made. Both sisters have since retained Attorney Saphier Hussein.
The incidents that took place along the Port Mourant Public Road were transferred to the Whim Magistrate’s Court for January 6, next, while those that took place at the Rose Hall Town Outpost were transferred to the Albion Magistrate’s Court for January 7, 2020.
On Wednesday, several videos made their way into the public domain showing the sisters verbally abusing and at one pushing a female policewoman. They were heard hurling racial remarks towards the ranks who were recording their actions from their phone.
Ramsew in her heated rant threatened to contact the Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, and having them “knocked off”. Singh also threatened to contact the Minister and the Commander of Region Six, Calvin Brutus.
Their blood alcohol level was tested and was found to be below the legal limit. Advice is currently being sought in relation to the remarks that were thrown at the ranks at the Outpost, a police source said.
Their mother was present in court yesterday.
Singh had previously made the news after she was reported missing. She had reportedly left her home on Diwali Day. She was later located at a relative’s home on West Coast Berbice two days later.
