Mayor of New Amsterdam, Winifred Haywood, and Deputy Mayor Wainwright McIntosh, were recently reelected to serve in their respective positions when Guyana’s oldest town in Berbice held elections for the various positions.
Haywood, a long-serving PNCR member and Councillor, was first elected Mayor in 2017. She was the only Councillor returning to the council since the 1994 elections. She served as Deputy Mayor on two occasions, once in the previous Council and again as Deputy Mayor before she was elected as Mayor in 2017.
Mayor Winifred Haywood, a retired head teacher and former President of the Guyana Teacher’s Union, is a practising preacher at the Mission Chapel Congregational Church in New Amsterdam.
Deputy Mayor McIntosh was also grateful to his colleagues for reelecting him to serve in the post. He promised to continue doing his best and to give the Mayor his full support in getting the work done.
McIntosh, who is relatively new to local politics, is already one of the more popular faces of the municipality. He is also an educator, serving for a number of years as a teacher and now as an Education Officer.
McIntosh is also a member of a number of social organisations including the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam.
Following the election, both the mayor and deputy mayor promised to work harder for the enhancement of New Amsterdam while at the same time providing improved services for the citizens within the township.
Haywood, in her thank you speech, expressed gratitude to her colleagues for the confidence shown in her. She thanked them for their support shown so far.
Since her accession to the top position, the town has seen a transformation with numerous developmental projects on the way.
With her vast experience and work attitude, residents are happy that she has been reelected to the prestigious position to continue the development of the town.
All the main roads and streets in the Town are being rehabilitation and resurfaced. Some were not touched for more than two decades.
Several major trenches have already been cleared. Residents are being urged to keep canals clean in an effort to prevent flooding within the town. They are also being urged to be more involved in cleaning their surroundings clean.
The Mayor said she will be placing special emphasis on the Esplanade Park and have a special eye on the ongoing Construction work of the Synthetic Track at the Burnham Park, New Amsterdam. Another plus for the affable Mayor is that she always has an ear for the residents.
Deputy Mayor McIntosh said he would like to see a clean, healthy and green environment, especial since “New Amsterdam is among the oldest town; we are going to try our best to lead by example.”
They are both pleading with residents to abide by the by-laws and regulations of the Mayor and Town Council.
