The trial of 29-year-old Imran Ramsaywack, who is accused of the March 2015 murder of US-based Guyanese trader, Samantha Benjamin, commenced yesterday before Justice Sandil Kissoon and a 12-person jury at the High Court in Georgetown.
State Prosecutors Mandel Moore and Abigail Gibbs presented a murder indictment against Ramsaywack, also known as “Kevin Jones”, “Coolie Boy” or “Ramsa”, formerly of 7 Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice.
The murder accused, who is being represented by lawyer Ravindra Mohabir, denied the allegation which stated that between March 25 and March 26, 2015 at Buxton, East Coast Demerara, he murdered Benjamin.
According to reports, Samantha Benjamin was killed in a house at Middle Walk, Buxton, on March 25, 2015 and her body was dismembered and subsequently dumped into the Atlantic Ocean, along the same village.
It was discovered the following morning.
Testifying on behalf of the prosecution yesterday was Orland Alleyne, a police rank attached to the Crime Laboratory at the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown. He said that on May 26, 2015 at around 09:30am, he was performing duties at the Crime Laboratory when he was instructed by his superior to visit a scene at Buxton where a body was discovered.
As a result, Alleyne told the court that he armed himself with a digital camera. On arrival at the location, the police rank said he saw a large crowd and the remains of a headless woman, whom he later learnt was Benjamin.
According to the witness, he took several photographs of the woman’s remains as well as the surroundings. Added to that, he and another officer searched the scene and found a head and limbs. The photographs taken by Alleyne, which amounted to 40, were tendered, admitted and marked as exhibits in the trial.
Also testifying was Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rondel Nedd, who is attached to the Crime Laboratory. ASP Nedd testified to visiting Benjamin’s home where he searched her bedroom and found a reddish substance suspected to be blood.
ASP Nedd will continue giving evidence this morning when the trial continues at 11:00 hrs.
