Traffic Chief, Linden Isles, told reporters on Thursday that his department will collaborate with the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) to place signs on the roadways and at pedestrian crossings.
Isles response comes after 11-year-old Adalia George was struck down by a speeding driver while using the pedestrian crossing along the Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
A video also went viral showing one driver slowing down and allowing George and her siblings to cross. But subsequently, a speeding car in an attempt to overtake the parked car, struck George and narrowly missed her siblings.
George who suffered a fractured neck, a broken shoulder blade and other injuries was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) last week.
The speeding driver was sentenced to pay a fine of $40,000 and will spend the next six months in jail.
However, a number of drivers have raised an issue about absent road signs which cause such accidents.
One driver said that there are many pedestrian crossings without road signs.
He continued that without these signs it is difficult for one to know that a pedestrian crossing is ahead.
The driver said that on numerous occasions he himself had to apply “last minute brakes” at such crossings without these key road signs.
Isles recognized that the missing road signs are factual and even though the traffic department is not responsible for erecting these signs, he promised to work along with MPI to ensure that it is done.
The Traffic Chief said little Adalia George although alive will continue to suffer from the trauma and after effects of her injuries.
He promised that his department will do everything possible to decrease the number of road accidents that occur.
