As part of the festivities for Road Safety Month 2019, Officers from the Ruimveldt Police Station’s Traffic Department are implementing mass education on traffic regulations to businesses and the public in and around the La Penitence area.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, Corporal Benjamin Dufu and Constable Edward Lowenfield highlighted several Christmas plans formulated in keeping with the mandate of the Guyana Police Force.
According to him, the plans are aimed at reducing traffic congestion as well as addressing various crime aspects.
Corporal Dufu said that the ranks of the Traffic Department have been conducting numerous talks with businesses as it relates to double parking, diagonal parking and parking on pavements. The plan also entails engaging members of the public with information on the negative impacts of their actions on other road users.
He stated that heavy Police presence will be in the La Penitence Market to combat robberies as well as put emphasis on lorry drivers, since the Department intends to meet with them to discuss parking allotment.
Additionally, as it draws closer to the Christmas period the Department intends to designate La Penitence Public Road a one-way, starting at Independence Boulevard, only allowing vehicles to proceed south, between the hours of 12:00 pm and 6:00 p.m. in an effort to regulate the influx of persons entering and existing Georgetown. This will be conducted at various intervals and closely monitored by Traffic Ranks.
He further encourages the public to report any suspicious behaviour by calling 911 or reporting it to the nearest Police Station. Other departments such as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have also dispatched patrol within the area.
