A 29-year-old police officer attached to the Brickdam Police Station met his demise yesterday morning after he was involved in a collision with a car.
He has been identified as Carl Roach, of Bagostown, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The incident occurred around 00:30hrs, in the vicinity of Brickdam and Lime Streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
At the time of the accident, Roach was riding a red and black Ducati motorcycle.
Kaieteur News understands that at the time of the accident, Roach was proceeding west on Brickdam when a black car PMM2528 that was proceeding in the opposite direction attempted to turn south onto Lime Street. Instead, the car slammed in Roach’s motorcycle.
The car was driven by a 34-year-old woman of Norton and Haley Streets, Wortmanville.
Roach was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital. When this publication arrived at the scene, Roach, who appeared to have suffered head injuries, was found lying in a pool of blood. Roach is survived by his wife and two-year-old daughter.
Recently, the police released statistics indicating that 90% of road deaths are caused by drunk driving and speeding. Last Sunday, the police also kicked off the observance for road safety week which is being held under the theme ‘Accidents Can Be Deadly, Use the Road Safely, Drive Defensively and Stay Alive.’
The Guyana Police Force in Collaboration with other organisations will be working together to ensure that certain penalties are enacted and road safety instruments such as road signs are in place. This will be done at the aim of educating the younger population about safe usage of the roadways.
Since the kick-start of Road Safety Week, there have been two fatal accidents, including Roach’s.
