Guyana Jaguars, without their leading all-rounder Raymon Reifer who was allowed to leave the team for his wedding in Barbados, were on the receiving end of Darren Bravo’ flaying blade as T&T Red Force climbed to 24 points with an emphatic six-wicket victory last night at the oval.
The Jaguars, who play the USA on Monday at the Brian Lara Academy in their final match before the first semi-final start on Thursday, remain on 16 points.
The Jaguars recovered from 78-5 in 26th over in a game reduced to 46 overs due to rain to reach 218-8 thanks to a magnificent unbeaten 97 from 93 balls decorated with six fours and four sixes by Jonathan Foo.
The 29-year-old’s second fifty took his runs tally to 293 and he added 71 for the sixth wicket with 21-year-old debutant Renaldo Ali-Mohammed who reached the boundary four times in 27.
The Berbice player, who last played competitive cricket in the 2017 CPL for the Jamaica Tallawahs, shared a 50-run ninth wicket stand in 5.3 overs with Veersammy Permaul, who was run out for 22 from 14 balls with two sixes, off the last ball.
Skipper Imran Khan had 3-23 from 10 overs of frugal leg-spin, while Yannick Ottley took 2-38 for the Red Force who replied with 220-4 chasing a revised target of 220 in 46 overs.
Bravo’s 98, his 34th 50-overs fifty, lasted 120 balls, included three fours and seven sixes and along with Jason Mohammed, who made an unbeaten 71 with six fours and two sixes, added 165 for fourth wicket before Bravo fell to Clinton Pestano with four needed to win.
Tion Webster (14) was bowled by Permaul at 16-1 before Permaul removed Kyle Hope (8) at 26-2.
Man-of-the Match Bravo, with a century and three fifties so far, got off the mark with an orgasmic cover drive off Pestano but after reaching 50 in the 12th over Hosein (16) provided Ali-Mohammed with his first wicket when he was caught behind with Red Force on 51-3.
Mohammed was on one when Gudakesh Motie at cover spilled a difficult catch off Lewis with the score on 55-3 before Bravo nonchalantly deposited Permaul for six before giving himself room and majestically stroked him for another classy boundary.
Mohammed hit Lewis for six before Bravo was dropped by Barnwell at mid-on off Ali-Mohammed on 25 at 80-3.
Bravo responded by easing Ali-Mohammed over long-off for effortless six and soon reached his 50 from 76 balls with a four and three sixes and when he reached 51 he became the first batsman to reach 400 runs in this tournament.
Mohammed hit a couple of fours before Bravo clobbered Barnwell for consecutive sixes as their partnership flourished as Mohammed reached 50 from 60 balls with three fours and two sixes.
Bravo hit an unfit looking Pestano for four before hitting Permaul out of the ground twice in the over before Mohammed finished the over with a boundary.
Earlier, Red force asked Jaguars to bat in overcast conditions on a slow track and sluggish outfield.
Chanderpaul Hemraj and Tagenarine Chanderpaul began cautiously before rain stopped play at 13:48hrs after five overs with the score on 13-0.
After a delay of 100 minutes, Hemraj (8) was LBW to Jon Russ Jaggesar at 17-1 in the eighth over.
Barnwell was greeted by a short ball from Anderson Phillip before executing an exquisite cover driven boundary, while Chanderpaul turned one for four in the same over.
Barnwell (6) then played an uppish drive to short extra cover as Khan struck at 43-2 in the 17th over to bring Foo to join the subdued Chanderpaul.
Foo lifted Odean Smith over mid-off for four to post the 50 in the 18th over.
The largest crowd of the tournament of about 100 fans in the stands saw Chanderpaul, who struggled for 59 balls, attempt an irresponsible reverse sweep and was taken by Keeper Stephen Katwaroo diving towards short fine leg.
His 25 included a solitary boundary and his demise left Jaguars on 56-3 in the 20th over as the sky became increasingly overcast.
Skipper Leon Johnson joined Foo and clipped Khan over mid-wicket for six before he was dropped on 11 by Khan off his own bowling at 73-3.
But Johnson (13) soon hit Yannick Ottley to long-on at 76-4 before Anthony Bramble (1) was taken at slip off Khan at 82-5 in the 26th over.
Ali-Mohammed was dropped at gully off Khan on four before Foo lofted Ottley for six and the 100 came up in the 32ndover.
Ali-Mohammed struggled to pierce the field before Foo hit Hossein for four and deposited Smith into that stands to post his 50 from 66 balls with three fours and two sixes.
Foo continued to bat positively and dumped Ottley for his third six, while Ali-Mohammed, who steered Phillips for four to third man and sliced him for another boundary, grew in confidence as the partnership increased.
But with score on 149 in the 40th and Foo flowing, the inexperienced Ali-Mohammed attempted to hit Ottley for six and was caught at long-off as he needlessly gave his wicket away when well set as the Jaguars slipped to 162-6.
Foo clobbered Phillips for six before Ramaal Lewis (10) skied Smith ‘miles’ into the air and was taken at point at 169-7 in the 42nd over before Permaul edged Phillips for four.
Foo smashed Smith over mid-off and flicked him for four more before pulling Phillips over long-on for four to move to 92 before he was left three short of a maiden ton.
