Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire. That was the fate of minibus driver, Kenford Padmore, who fled from the Providence Police Station on Saturday, only to end up being soundly beaten by residents in nearby Herstelling, East Bank Demerara.
They had reportedly thought that he was a thief.
According to reports, the 32-year-old Padmore was driving south along the East Bank Demerara public road around 16:00 hrs, when another minibus struck his vehicle and damaged a mirror.
Padmore and his conductor went to the Providence Police Station to make a report. It was while he was filing his complaint that the rank taking the report allegedly smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath.
Padmore was immediately subjected to a breathalyzer, and it was confirmed that he was above the legal limit.
According to a police official, a rank ordered Padmore to park his vehicle in the station compound prior to being booked. Instead, the driver fled the compound.
Unfortunately, he ended up in Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, where some residents, suspecting that he was up to no good, inflicted a sound thrashing on the hapless driver.
He was reportedly rescued by the police, and brought back to the same station from which he had fled. He was treated at the Diamond Hospital for facial injuries, and reportedly released on $20,000 station bail.
The individuals who allegedly beat Padmore were also detained briefly. They were eventually released as police continue investigations into the entire incident.
