It is quite disappointing to read that again the Government and Ministry of Education is sourcing exercise books from Trinidad when the Kaieteur News (KN) and other local companies can produce the books right here. No wonder the government does not have a local content policy for oil. Already the KN is producing very nice exercise books so why are we going to Trinidad? Are we trying to build Guyana and support Guyanese or are we more committed to providing jobs for overseas people?
Even the late Forbes Burnham had enough sense to preach a “buy local” philosophy.
Similarly, why was the Ministry of Education trying to buy fruit juice for its breakfast programme from tiny Suriname when Guyana can supply the whole of Caricom? What are these people thinking? What motivates them to do such backward stuff over and over? Are there kickback schemes involved?
Why does Guyana import canned foods when Guyana has an overabundance of foods that can be canned right here, and we can export all over the world?
We had also read about Guyana importing plantain chips and tamarind balls from Caricom countries. Are we such a backward country to allow these things to continue? This Government is so rudderless when it comes to having good policies that would lead to more jobs being created for our Guyanese people.
Already we see that the local folks are not being involved or invited to oil related events, and are left to be second-class citizens in their own land. So, for those who think oil will make us rich, and local people will get good paying jobs, you will be sorely disappointed.
No wonder our business people are saying their local companies cannot compete with foreign companies since the PNC government is giving the foreign companies concessions that make them more competitive than Guyanese companies. As Chris Rock would say, “That ain’t right.”
The Government is working hard at making us second-class to foreigners.
Can we afford 5 more years of such backwardness. We must put a stop to this on March 2.
Sincerely,
Jerry Singh
