Eleven-year-old Adalia George, a grade six student of the Soesdyke Primary School, remains hospitalised after she was struck by an allegedly speeding driver last Monday while using a pedestrian crossing along the Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The child lives with her mother at Lot 240 Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Kaieteur News understands that the teen was with her sibling when the incident occurred. As a result of the accident, the victim suffered a broken shoulder, fractured neck, cuts and bruises to the face along with swelling and laceration to other parts of the body. The vehicle involved in the accident is a silver Toyota Premio bearing registration number PXX 403.
According to sources at the hospital, the child was recently removed from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and transferred to another ward in the hospital.
In an interview, the child’s mother, Allison George, told Kaieteur New that although she was not at the scene of the accident, she was told by an eyewitness that Adalia and her siblings exited a bus and were about to cross the road when the accident occurred.
Allison, who is also a teacher at the Soesdyke Primary School, said that it is a miracle that her child was able to survive the accident considering the injuries, which she sustained as a result of the impact from the car.
“She is recovering but very slowly. The doctors removed her from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and put her in a ward. She is responding to treatment and I am very thankful for that, Adalia is a very quiet and easy-going child, I don’t want anything to happen to my baby.”
Allison added that at times the child would wake up in her bed at the city hospital and start screaming for help. “I’m praying that my child will be able to make a full recovery from that tragic ordeal.”
After the accident, Adalia was first rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. However due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she remains a patient.
Based on the 14-second-long video footage of the accident that is circulating on social media, eight seconds into the video shows the traffic slowing down at the pedestrian crossing to allow the children to cross the road.
Two seconds later, the video shows the motorcar that was going at a fast rate overtaking the other halted vehicles, later hitting the child. After the accident, the other children who were with the child ran to her rescue.
The child is set to write the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) next year.
