I am inviting you to try to contact the Ministerial Advisor or any staffer at the Ministry of Social Protection. On their facebook page, their number is listed as 225-4186.
When you dial that number, you get a Welcome message that invites you to dial the extension of any party if you know their extension. I have not been able to find a listing of extensions on any public site. You are also invited to dial 0 to get the operator.
For weeks and weeks of trying, the 0 option has never been answered. It goes to a series of beeps then cuts off.
After the invite to dial 0, there are other options given – dial 3 for Accounts, 4 for Personnel, 5 for Probation and Welfare and 6 for Microcredit.
Once, I got the extension 5 to answer and was directed to a number that rang out endlessly, without being returned to an operator.
Try to visit the Ministry and ask to speak to personnel. You are greeted by a receptionist/telephone operator at the bottom of the stairs whose primary focus seems to be to ensure that the staffers of the Ministry are not disturbed. One has to have supreme skills of charm to get past this desk.
It has been my experience that if one tries to get help for the destitute in this country at any Government Ministry, the Office of the First Lady or any Agency, one is directed to the Ministry of Social Protection as the Agency with the resources and mandate to help the poor and homeless.
However, the poor and homeless have no access to this Ministry, and this Ministry says it has no financial resources to help the poor.
We can only hope that the staffers of this Ministry enjoy their Christmas Party, for which I am sure they will find resources. No member of the public should even try to get any assistance from now to the end of the year. The Ministry is busy and broke.
What are we really doing in this country? Only God knows.
Yours sincerely,
S. Khan
