Action in the ‘Rio Indoor Streetball Championship’ got underway at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue Thursday evening with several matches and exciting play in the Three Peat Promotions coordinated event.
With a $1,000,000 first prize at stake teams are expected to pull out all the stops to either win or get to the money round of the tournament.
One of the know favourites, Sparta Boss, enjoyed the biggest margin of victory on opening night with a 5-0 win over Melanie to send a strong message to all pretenders for the title. While another favourite, Broad Street, also were on winners’ row in their match. Full results and fixtures for the next round are listed below.
The second night of the event is fixed for today at the same venue. The round-robin competition, which lasts for the duration of eight nights, will conclude with the grand finale on December 14th.
The other playing nights are November 21st, 23rd, 28th, 30th and December 7th. The winner will walk away with $1,000,000, while the second, third and fourth place finishers will pocket $400,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
At the end of the group round, the top two finishers from each section and the best four third place teams will advance to the knockout round.
