Dear Editor,
Both of the major political parties have to whip up their audiences at political meetings to show support in what was in a time gone by their traditional strongholds.
The PPP, however, has shown that they have the capacity to mobilize thousands, while the ruling Coalition hundreds.
These supporters misguided by race and partisan party politics taken together do not comprise one half of the population.
The turnout at the March 2nd, 2020 General Elections will reveal that race politics can be on its way to the political graveyard as the younger generation grows in number.
The PPP and the PNC Coalition of parties came to power by the promise of “Constitutional reform”.
The controversial 1980 Constitution was nullified on September 18th, 2019 now it is the “trickle-down” effect of oil/gas revenue and cash transfers that is the voice in the wilderness.
The trickle-down effect is a familiar tune that goes back to Mexico oil boom and NAFTA – North American Free Trade Area, that was to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. Today, there are 90 million Mexicans living in abject poverty and the US President Donald Trump is building a wall to keep the Mexicans from colonizing the USA.
It will be no different in Guyana with these two old parties that have grown accustomed after more than 60 years to using racism and partisan party politics to reward party loyalty.
While the APNU+AFC Coalition promises higher wages this would pale into insignificance alongside the spiraling cost of living.
The oil/gas sector to date has not employed a hundred Guyanese, most of the employees are from foreign countries, or on the other hand, thousands of Guyanese over the age of 18, ready for the job market are left idle and unproductive.
Nowhere has any of the two parties addressed the burning issue of climate change and the impending disaster that faces the Guyanese population of which 2/3 of our population are living on the coastland that will be inudated
The entire Coastal Region from Mexico – Central America – South America and the Caribbean islands will be affected. This is where a farsighted Government made up of Guyanese who are committed to the safety and welfare of the Guyanese Nation comes in.
To begin with, let’s be quite honest – no one party or race can govern in the interest of the Guyanese nation.
We need a broad-based Government that would ensure the safety of the lives of its Citizens, open up vast tracks of fertile lands for housing and agricultural purposes on high grounds.
The oil/gas revenue could be used to develop the land and infrastructure.
With land, Guyanese can be independent, it would see the eradication of poverty and set the stage for Guyana to become the “breadbasket” of the region.
The large-scale production of hemp would add to Guyana’s prosperity – with trade and investment opportunities and tourism. The path these two parties have chartered will end in calamity…after oil, the Wall Street water barons are going to come to Guyana for our water as water will become even more precious than gold, water is life.
