Tourism and Hospitality Association, GFF to sign MOU for Sports Tourism and football

The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana and the Guyana Football Federation of
Guyana will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding for the promotion of sport tourism and football today at the Roraima Duke Lodge at 10:00hrs.
A release indicated that Tourism and sports are two social phenomena in the 21st century that mobilise millions of people the world over. They are two sectors that complement each other and share common goals such as forging understanding and closer relations between peoples of different cultures and lifestyles; and contributing to the promotion of peace among nations. Together, tourism and sport also represent the most powerful economic driving force of society today with enormous potential to generate a very wide-range of economic spin-offs.
(UNWTO) Sports tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in tourism. More and more tourists are interested in sport activities during their trips whether sports are the main objective of travel or not.
Sport events of various kinds and sizes attract tourists as participants or spectators and destinations try to add local flavours to them to distinguish themselves and provide authentic local experiences. Mega sport events such as Olympics and World Cups can be a catalyst for tourism development if successfully leveraged in terms of destination branding, infrastructure development and other economic and social benefits.
The development of Guyana Football has witnessed rapid growth and enhanced visibility through numerous appearances in regional and international match-ups and successfully hosted the FIFA Development Conference here in Guyana. With more visitors to our shores, it is all the more reason that this commitment is well-timed by the local Tourism and Football Associations whose collaboration intends to:
• Promotion and Marketing- To increase visibility of the destination and football to international partners
• Research and Information Sharing- To improve readiness and promotional efforts of sports tourism events
• Product Development – To develop initiatives that promote the events we mutually develop such as Beach Football and Futsol- small sided football competitions at locations across the country
• Sustainability of Ventures- To devise strategies that supports the sustainability of the
organisations through the hosting of activities.
