There was quite an uproar on one of the major social media platforms (Facebook) when a video surfaced of a hire car driver driving at a considerable rate of speed with a dog tied to the bumper of his car dragging it.
The video was captured by passengers in another car who could be heard expressing shock and pity over what they were seeing. Persons on Facebook were outraged and even called for the driver to be jailed for animal cruelty.
Just hours after the video was posted, Lancelot McKenzie, of Brighton Village was arrested by police Tuesday night. Statements were taken from him and he was released on his own recognizance yesterday morning based on the instructions given by the Inspector in charge, Orin Joseph.
McKenzie said he is the owner of the dog but it was dead when he tied it to the bumper.
His reason for dragging the animal? McKenzie told police that the animal seemed weak and was not moving much on Tuesday. He said that he left home and returned only to reportedly find it dead.
He told police he decided to discard of the dog at a backland location, a distance away from his home and opted to tie the animal and drag it while driving.
He is claiming that the animal was his pet and that he “loves dogs”. It is unclear if he provided an explanation as to why the dog could not be buried in his yard.
However, according to a police source, neighbours are claiming that the dog ate his livestock and he retaliated with anger towards his pet, tied him to the car and dragged it while it was alive.
Animal rights NGO’s such as the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are yet to speak out on the video.
