2019 BCB/RHTYSC/Busta Champion of Champions Six teams advance to Second round after successful start to tournament

The 16th edition of the annual Berbice Cricket Board/ Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, MS/ Busta Champion of Champions 40 overs first division tournament got underway on Monday last to a flying start. Six teams have advanced to the second round of the tournament, scheduled for November 30th.
Albion Community Centre CC, Port Mourant CC, Young Warriors CC and Blairmont CC registered victories over West Berbice, Skeldon, Rose Hall Canje and Police respectively, while Tucber Park benefitted from a walkover against Upper Corentyne. Defending Champions, Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt Flour, drew a bye into the second round.
At the Bush Lot Ground on the West Coast of Berbice, Albion defeated West Berbice by 131 runs. Batting first after winning the toss, Albion rattled up an impressive 276 for 8 off 40 overs. The top scorers were Berbice Under 19 player Jeetendra Outar 63 with seven boundaries, Kandasammy Surujnarine 40 not out. Bowling for West Berbice, Keyron Fraser and Christopher Bissoon took 3 and 2 wickets respectively for 60 and 20 respectively.
West Berbice in response, were bowled out for 145 in 35.3 overs with Fraser returning with the bat to score 62, while Joshua Vantull supported with 20. National youth player Gourav Ramesh took 4 for 25 from 8 overs, Mahendra Chaitnarine 2 for 21 and Beesham Surujnarine 2 for 38 for Albion.
At the Port Mourant Ground the, home team batting first, amassed 240 for 7 in 40 overs. Kellon Carmichael top scored with 35, while West Indies youth player Rampertab Ramnauth 33, Arif Chan 28, Trishan Ramsarran 25 and Demetri Cameron 22 offered support. Kevin Clarke took 3 for 31 for Skeldon, who in reply were bowled out for 182 to lose by 58 runs. C. France and A. Hussain were the principal scorers with 40 and 38 respectively. Thirteen years old Salim Khan took 3 for 35, while Carmichael completed a good match with 3 for 40.
Centuries from national youth players Seon Glassgow and Javed Karim spearheaded home team Blairmont to a mammoth 291 for 3 from 40 overs. Glasgow struck eleven sixes and four boundaries in an unbeaten 104, while Karim 101 included seven boundaries and two sixes. Marvon Prashad chipped in with 65. Police were then bundled out for 101 as only Paul Tyndall with 35 and D. Phillips 21 reached double figures. Left arm spinner Waqar Hassan 5 for 32, Nigel Deodat 2 for 18 and Shabeer Baksh 2 for 21 bowled well for Blairmont.
Young Warriors CC held their nerves to overcome Rose Hall Canje by two wickets at the Canje Ground. The home team made 186 for 5 with the inform Sasenarine Sukhu continuing his impressive season with an unbeaten 73 which included six boundaries and four maximums, while Lee David made 48. Trevon Stanislaus and Linden Austin took two wickets apiece for YWCC for 18 and 31 respectively. The visitors in reply, reached 188 for 8 in 37.5 overs with Seon Hetmyer 41 and Ricardo Ramdehol 25 been the best batters.
BCB President Hilbert Foster visited all the venues and expressed his delight at the high standard of cricket played. Foster expressed his disappointment that the cricketing powers in Guyana had banned all of the national contracted cricketers from participating in a BCB organised tournament. The RHTYSC, MS he stated over the year has obtained the sponsorship, just like how the Albion CC raised close to one million dollars for two under-19 tournaments.
The BCB President expressed frustration that clubs are debarred from playing players which they have invested in for many years. He, however stated that the clubs in Berbice are determined to not let persons from outside of the county stop the progress currently taking place there.
