The Weather forecast for today is not good as arch rivals Guyana Jaguars will battle Trinidad & Tobago Red Force and the rain here when they square off from 13:30hrs today at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain in the second round of the Colonial Medical Insurance Super50 Cupwill feature another Day/Nighter.
Guyana, who lost to the CCC in last year’s final, has nine titles but none since 2005, while T&T has won the most (11) but have not tasted success since they beat Barbados in 2016.
The Red Force, led by unbeaten centuries from Daren Bravo and Jeremy Solozano beat 2018 champions the Windwards by eight wickets with eight overs to spare, while Jaguars struggled to a last ball win against the West Indies Emerging Players in their opening matches on Thursday.
Debutant Kemol Savory’s 71 was the Jaguars top score but took 146 balls in another sub-standard batting performance as only Chris Barnwell (37), Johnathon Foo (27) and Chanderpaul Hemraj, the batsman in the Jaguars team to score a century at this level, making 18.
Hemraj became the 14th Guyanese to score a Regional 50 overs ton in last year’s tournament and will hope to give his team a solid foundation with Tagenarine Chanderpaul who made just three runs in the last
Kemol Savory followed up a good domestic season with an unbeaten 71 on his Regional debut on Thursday.
match. Skipper Leon Johnson could join Clive Lloyd and Roger Harper as Captains to win the double, but for that to happen he needs to contribute with the bat.
Savory looked solid but used up too many dot balls and if the Emerging Players had managed to reach 200 the Jaguars would have lost.
Foo, back in regional cricket, looked good as did Barnwell, but both failed carry on from good starts, while Raymond Reifer, Ramaal Lewis and Veerasammy Permaul all failed against a good, but by no means an outstanding bowling attack in their last game.
Anthony Bramble needs more rest to be ready as the tournament gets deep and Savory will have to don the gloves again.
The bowlers all had a good day on Thursday with the spinners; Lewis, Permaul and part time left-arm spinner Hemraj all producing economical spells, while pacers Ronsford Beaton, Rifer and Clinton Pestano never allowed the batsmen to get on top of them. There was need for Barnwell, another pace option.
Today the Guyanese bowlers will have to contend with an in-form Solozano and Bravo who has returned to form with his seventh List ‘A’ century with three of them coming in ODIs.
Opener Tion Webster will want some runs as will Bajan Kyle Hope, who both fell cheaply, before Bravo and Solozano featured in an unfinished double century third wicket stand as they reached 238-2 and just missed a bonus point by two overs.
Steven Katwaroo, Jason Mohammed, Khesan Ottley and Imran Khan, who started as an opener, are all capable of runs.
The 23-year-old pacer pair of Anderson Phillip, who made his 50-over debut in the last match, Oden Smith will provide the quick stuff on what should be a slow track, while Off-Spinner John Russ Jaggesar, Ottley, Mohammed and Khan will do the spinning.
