An unbeaten 71 from debutant Kemol Savory, which earned him the Man-of-the-Match Award in Thursday’s Guyana Jaguars’ opening game, which ended in a last ball victory against the West Indies Emerging Players, was described by Jaguars’ head Coach Esuan Crandon as a match winning innings.
Former T&T and West Indies pacer Tony Gray (right) wishes Jaguars’ Head Coach Esuan Crandon well during their net session at the indoor nets at the National Cricket Centre.
Savory’s carefully constructed innings lasted 146 balls and included six fours along with a Dilscoop off the final ball with the scores tied. The Police left hander also hit a six.
“Savory played a match winning innings for us, he’s in good batting form at the moment and was able to apply himself and stay to the end.”
But the Essequibian, who did the Wicketkeeping duties after replacing an injured Anthony Bramble, faced 102 dots batting at number three and the 37-year-old Coach from Rose Hall Town had some issues with the Jaguars batting as they took 50 overs to reach 189-8 to win by two wickets.
“Our batting obviously wasn’t the best last night (Thursday night) and although conditions were difficult to bat I honestly thought we could’ve done much better in rotating the strike and demonstrate a more positive intent to score,” said Crandon, who has 90 First-Class wickets from 38 games and 29 in 50-overs cricket from 28 matches in an 11-year career which ended in 2011.
“It was an important win for us last night. Starting with a win was always one of our plans going into the tournament but the emerging players didn’t make it any easy for us. It was a hard fought victory to the last ball,” explained Crandon.
Crandon, who was first appointed National Coach in 2012, said the Jaguars’ bowlers did well to restrict the opposition below two hundred (185-8) on a slow pitch which was very difficult to bat on.
“The emerging bowlers were very good, they assessed the conditions well and executed their plans effectively.
There were also two crucial stages in the innings when we batted we failed to capitalize on those two partnerships with Savory and (Chris) Barnwell and Savory and (Johnathon) Foo.
One of those partnerships should’ve won the game for us but it didn’t happen so,” reasoned Crandon.
Looking ahead to today’s match against arch rivals Trinidad Red Force, Crandon revealed that their plans for Trinidad are clear and simple.
“We know what to expect from them and we’re aware of the brand of cricket they play.
Trinidad have a decent team on paper and are expected to play well at home at Queen’s Park Oval but we will have to improve and lift our standards and be really competitive and consistent with good all round performances,” concluded Crandon.
Crandon has coached the Jaguars to consecutive First-Class titles, their last of nine 50-over titles was achieved in 2005 at Bourda when Crandon was a player and his Assistant Coach Shiv Chanderpaul was Captain.
