The Region Three (3)- [Essequibo Island- West Demerara] Education Department is taking steps to ensure the 59th National Schools Swimming, Cycling and Track and Field Championship, which will be held at three venues including the Leonora Track and Field Centre from November 17-22, is incident-free and that the athletes behaviour are in keeping with what is required.
According to Regional Education Officer (REdO) – Region Three, Ms Anesta Douglas, this approach is necessary considering that a large number of youths will be away from their families for that period (one week). At the time when this was revealed Ms Douglas was having an Inter-Agency meeting at the Region three Education Department to derive an appropriate strategy.
Douglas said that the initiative involving, the Ministry of Social Protection, Parent Teachers Associations (PTA’s), Officers from the School Welfare Department and the West Demerara Hospital, will ensure that the most suitable approach is adopted.
According to Ms Bernice Corbin-Zephyr, Senior Schools’ Welfare Officer attached to Region three, four officers will be on duty utilizing a shift system to monitor the athletes’ behaviour and to offer guidance where and when necessary.
Further, Ms Corbin-Zephyr said that the officers will be at the Leonora Track and Field Center and at the athletes’ village for the duration of the championship. “It’s not that we anticipate any trouble, but we know when youths are in the same space for that length of time you have to be vigilant and proactive to ensure that there are no issues.”
Additionally, Ms Corbin-Zephyr believes that the attention and focus should be on the athletes and their performances and it is hoped that with the formation of this committee this goal will be realized.
The 59th National Swimming, Cycling and Track and Field Championship will be held at three venues, the Cycling at the National Park on November 17, Swimming at the National Aquatic Centre at Lilliendaal on November 18 and Track and Field November 19-22 at the Leonora Track and Field Centre.
