The refusal by the Guyana Sugar Corporation to pay wage increases to sugar workers for four consecutive years is not only unfair but also insensitive to the welfare of sugar workers and their families and should be corrected.
Granted that the Corporation may be operating at a loss, workers should not be made the ‘sacrificial lambs’ over what is essentially a managerial problem. It is not the fault of sugar workers that the Corporation is operating at a loss. Instead it is the result of poor decision making at the policy and managerial levels.
By refusing to pay sugar workers salary increases to offset the decline in purchasing power of their income through inflation, these workers are in effect subsidizing the industry by being forced to accept stagnant wages.
The Government has a responsibility to intervene in the matter with a view to bringing a satisfactory resolution to the plight facing sugar workers.
