Led by the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, Nigel Bowen; East Coast Demerara’s Plaisance Guardians bounced away with championship honours when the 2019 edition of the Brusche’s Basketball Classic (knockout) concluded on Saturday night last at the Mackenzie Sports Club, Hard Court in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
Playing in the 7th Biennial tournament and coming up against the home team, Victory Valley Royals in the Under-18 showdown, the Guardians were held 9-9 at the end of the first quarter but thereafter, took the advantage as they led 27-16 at the half way stage; 41-34 at the end of the third quarter, eventually winning, 61-53.
The champions were presented with a cash prize whilst the players received replica trophies. The tournament was sponsored by the Brusche Basketball Foundation. The teams contesting this year’s knockout tournament were Victory Valley Royals and Junior Kings of Linden, Kwakwani Ballers (Kwakwani), Bartica Rangulars (Bartica), Rose Hall Jammers (Berbice), Pepsi Sonics (Georgetown) and Plaisance Guardians.
