This is not news to anyone but I would still like to bring it to the fore since there seems to be no end in sight. The residents of the Diamond/Grove area are tired of being scared and helpless in their homes. The dilemma is even worse for the poor and feeble. I would like to highlight just such an incident that recently occurred.
Editor, my neighbour is a very old and poor man. His house is the size of most bathrooms and his roof is a tarpaulin. He has no water, electricity or even a landline phone but yet he was the victim of unscrupulous criminals.
They attacked and robbed him of the little he had right in his home. This was the daunting news that me and my family awoke to Saturday morning. This senior citizen was not safe even in the little space he called home. He was bruised and evidently traumatized from the attack he endured.
The perpetrators were young men who are known to roam the village and have been known to target persons of all ages and status, mainly under the cover of night. This is especially easy for these criminal elements since the areas they target are without street lights.
Many streets, particularly in the Diamond area, are dark and lonely after the sun sets making it easy for criminal elements to pounce on suspecting persons.
Many of these incidents go unreported because many persons are convinced that the police would do little to nothing because of past experience. I personally had cause in the past to call for police assistance but was told by the rank on duty that there was no vehicle available.
Editor, this is a glaring example of the police force failing our people. The Police Force is mandated to serve and protect and it is this that we the citizens are calling for before the situation further escalates.
