The Third edition of the annual Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) Inc. / Prime Minister’s T20 Cup will bowl off today at several venues in Georgetown with teams from Florida, New York, Canada and Guyana battling for supremacy.
The tournament which is being held in collaboration with the Office of the Presidency Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission will be contested in the Open, Over-45 (Masters) and Over-50 (Legends) categories. The Legends category is new to the tournament while Speed Boat and Regal Masters are both two-time defending champions in the All-Star and Masters divisions, respectively.
Some of the highly anticipated matches on today include defending Open champions Speed Boat against arch rivals Regal All Stars at Queens College ground. The Open
category also includes debutant Cotton Field Wild Oats from Essequibo, SVC New York, New York All Stars, Farm XI and SVC Grill Masters.
Among the players that will be on show are Lennox Marks, Safraz Esau, Ameer Khan, Sewchand Budhu, Fazal Rafiek and Wazeer Hussain.
Defending Over-45 champions, Regal Masters will begin their quest for a third consecutive title against Fishermen Masters at Everest. Wellman Masters, SVC Corriverton and HS Masters are among the teams in this category which will see the likes of Unnis Yusuf, Zameer Hassan, Eric Thomas, Mahendra Hardyal, Wayne Jones, Mohamed Rafeek and Troy Lewis in action.
Guyana Rockaway Legends will make their debut in the Over-50 division which also includes Regal Legends, Savage Legends, Ramchand’s Legends and Orlando Legends. Among the players set to battle in this segment are Guyana Rockaway Legends skipper Hafeez Ali, Henry Sachichand, Deochand Ramjattan, Anand Persaud, Basil Persaud, Sam Persaud and Latchaya Ramcharitar.
Matches in this category will take place at Queens College and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda. Other venues being used are YMCA, Malteenoes Sports Club, Transport Sports Club, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) grounds. Each team will play three round-robin preliminary matches with the hope of advancing to the semifinals tomorrow afternoon. Today will be two preliminary round of matches all beginning at 09:30 and 13:00hrs while the final preliminary round match takes place tomorrow at 09:30hrs.
In all there will be a total of 49 matches over the three days including a lone female encounter between Factory Price Divas and Superwoman XI on Sunday at Everest where the finals of the various categories will be played. Admission to all venues is free.
The winning teams in the Open and Over-45 categories will pocket a trophy and $500,000 each while the runners-up will receive a trophy $100,000. The Legends winner will take home a trophy and $300,000 and the runner-up a trophy and $100,000. Medals and other prizes will be given to outstanding players in the various divisions.
